The contents of STATUS_MAIL are replaced in the STATUS_FORMAT variable for any occurence of %M while you get new mail. The STATUS_MAIL may contain occurences of %M which will be replaced by the total number of mail messages you have. If you have no mail, %M is replaced by nothing in the STATUS_FORMAT.
